How to set up Meta Pixel on Shopify

Step-by-step guide to installing the Meta Pixel on your Shopify store for conversion tracking.

How to set up Meta Pixel on Shopify

The Meta Pixel lets Facebook track what happens on your website after someone clicks your ad -- purchases, add-to-cart events, page views, and more. Without it, Meta cannot optimize your campaigns for conversions.

Steps to install

  1. Go to your Shopify Admin > Settings > Customer events
  2. Click Add custom pixel or find the Meta Pixel app in the list
  3. Enter your Pixel ID (found in Meta Events Manager > Data Sources > Your Pixel)
  4. Enable the pixel and save your changes
  5. Install the Meta Pixel Helper Chrome extension to test that the pixel is firing correctly
  6. Verify that the following standard events are firing: PageView, ViewContent, AddToCart, Purchase

Pro tip

If you are using the Facebook & Instagram sales channel on Shopify, your pixel may already be connected through that integration. Check Events Manager before adding a second pixel manually.

Testing your pixel

After installation, use the Meta Pixel Helper Chrome extension to browse your store and confirm events are triggering. You should see:

  • PageView on every page load
  • ViewContent on product pages
  • AddToCart when adding items to the cart
  • InitiateCheckout at the checkout step
  • Purchase on the order confirmation page

If events are missing or showing errors, check that the Pixel ID matches exactly and that no ad blockers are interfering with your test.

Important

Do not install the same Pixel ID twice. Duplicate pixels cause event deduplication issues, which inflates your reported conversions and confuses Meta's algorithm.

Next step

Once your pixel is working, consider setting up Conversions API (CAPI) to send server-side events alongside browser events. This dramatically improves tracking accuracy, especially for iOS 14+ users.
